Year 3/4 - Foxes

Foxes class

Life in Year 3 and 4

At Trinity, Year 3 marks the journey upstairs in the school! Foxes, Badgers and Adders are the Year 3/4 rooms. We try to build on the excellent foundation children have had in the early years and KS1 by keeping some things familiar while introducing new ways of working which help the children manage the step up in the curriculum.

This year’s topics include “Inventors and Discoverers” and “Can we feed the world?” Again – we have carefully designed topics to engage and inspire the children within the Foundation subjects. Visitors are welcomed to further enhance this learning. The children will continue to write in a cross curricular way as well as having distinct English lessons where specific areas of grammar and word class are taught. Our handwriting scheme, Kinetic Letters, continues as children practise daily with fluency and flow leading to create automaticity for their joined script. Modern Foreign language sessions are introduced in the summer term of Year 3 and built upon in Year 4.

Our Power Maths scheme is carefully planned and sequenced, being taught in year groups, not mixed classes. Individually planned lessons are also used to re-visit areas of challenge in our learning. Times Tables Rock Stars is used throughout Year 3/4 to embed those tables. Science, Computing and the Foundation areas are still taught as experientially as possible and Tapestry is still used as our assessment in these areas. It is also used as a great communication tool with parents.

Reading is still of huge priority with Accelerated Reader tracking text preferences and comprehension skills. For those not quite ready to move to AR we support through the colour banded book scheme. We also hear children read individually bi-weekly and they all have guided reading once a week. We enjoy listening to our whole class book every day and regularly recommend books to our peers. We visit the library once a week and can ask our experienced librarian for book suggestions.

The children still have Forest School, now bi-weekly for half a morning. This allows the children to apply scientific inquiry and field work skills whilst developing their character.

Useful links when schooling at home

  • MyOn – access to a wealth of e-books, most of which are linked to Accelerated Reader and can be quizzed on.
  • Bug Club – for those children still on reading scheme books.
  • Times Tables Rock Stars https://ttrockstars.com/
  • Topmarks Maths https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?Subject=16 Please filter by subject – GREAT Maths reinforcement.
